| Summary |
Local-Level Integrated Information System (LIIS) in Uganda is a process that aims at addressing the development information, knowledge access, and communication needs, within the framework of efforts towards the
achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs, at the community level.
Information management is not a new activity for A2N-Uganda. In a bid to improve rural livelihoods through information management, A2N-Uganda is doing the following:
1. Publishing manuals and booklets on livelihood skills including Sustainable Agricultural(SA) farming techniques, HIV/AIDS, gender, nutrition and environment.
2. Screening educational videos during training.
3. Facilitating the setting up of info-kiosks and training the librarians and users in information management.
4. Facilitating communities to participate in exhibitions on thematic days.
5. Facilitating Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) training so as to enable men and women farmers to read and write. 6. In partnership with a telecommunications Company (MTN), availing communities with village phones. However, LIIS will enable A2N-Uganda to strategically integrate these information activities and knowledge services into its programme in order to better meet the information and knowledge needs of the communities and share widely A2NUganda’s and the partner communities’ wealth of experience in livelihood improvement for greater impact.
In order for A2N to assess and establish the information and knowledge needs of the community as well as the mechanisms and channels for sharing information and knowledge, a Needs Assessment (NA) was carried out in order to have the communities involved in assessing their real needs in a participatory manner. The NA was carried out by A2N Uganda in the LIIS implementation districts of Kabale, Kamuli and Tororo. These Districts were selected because: -
1. They provide a wide geographical coverage representative of Uganda
2. They are marginalised districts and deserve development services
3. They are operational districts for A2N Uganda which means LIIS can be
easily integrated into ongoing activities.
